Big Maths: Money

This week during Big Maths, Primary 1 began exploring money. We looked at different types of coins and their value. The children had lots of fun participating in different activities to promote coin recognition.
The boys and girls loved playing in the shop, taking turns to be the customer and shop keeper and using money to pay for items.

The children were tasked with sorting the money hidden in the sand into the correct box. This was a challenge!
We had a go at coin rubbing to help us recognise different coins and their value!

What are the main features of a coin? Rahaf has been exploring this at one of our activities!

We really enjoyed playing coin bingo with Mrs Campbell to help us remember the names of the coins and what they look like.

Homework Update

Here is a quick update of a few changes to homework and reading starting this week:

Reading
The children are ready to move on to the next stage of our reading scheme. To prepare the children for their new books, homework this week is to learn the new reading words, as well as revising previous words.  New reading books will be issued on Tuesday 27th February.

Phonics
We are now moving away from using the blue jotters for phonics homework to doing a phonics worksheet.  The children should copy the sounds, copy the words and finally read the words and draw a picture for each word.

Common words
The children will be issued with a green jotter to practise common words.  Each week the children will be given five common words to read and write.  The children should copy the common words onto the next page in column ‘try 1’ and ‘try 2’.  When this is returned to class on Thursday the children will be tested on these words.  Please ensure this jotter is returned every Thursday.

Maths

The children have been learning basic addition using numbers to 10.  As part of this we are learning number stories.  This week we are learning the number story of four.

Active Phonics

P1 have been practising reading and writing their CVC words during our weekly active phonics sessions. They are making super progress!
Eela has wrote a sentence: "The bird sat on a nest"

Jack spelled out the word 'dog' using the sand letters.

CVC writing practice using the flashcard photos.

Look at all the words we have written!

Active Maths: Adding

Primary 1 have been learning about addition. They really enjoy practicing their adding skills during our active maths sessions.

Eco Week : Waste Minimisation.

During our Eco topic, Primary 1 has been finding out about the importance of the 3 R's - to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and the importance of this to our planet. The children had lots of ideas about how we could reuse the plastic and paper materials that we has collected in the classroom. These ideas were then implemented during our plan, do, review sessions.
Charlie enjoyed reusing different materials to play in the sand.

Reece is testing out his design to see if it sinks or floats! He reused plastic containers to create his boat.
The children are using different materials from our recycling bin to create their own art work!
Hanan created a beautiful drawing using materials from our recycling bin.
The children at this station are sorting the different types of rubbish into the correct recycling bins.
The children had to think about what materials would be sink or float when designing their boats.

After listening to a story about the importance of recycling, some of our learners wanted to retell the story using our loose parts play resources.

P1 visit the Science Centre.

Primary 1 had a wonderful day at the Glasgow Science Centre. The children attended a workshop which focused on the five senses. The children loved exploring the different exhibits and had a brilliant day with their friends!
